On that beautiful summer’s evening in 2009, after a day spent exploring London’s Docklands, I came across this near the West India Quay DLR station.

St. Peter’s Barge or London’s Floating Church
St. Peter’s Barge claims to be London’s only floating church, but for me it could have been the world’s only as far as I was concerned. For till then I had not seen or come across anything like this and have not till date.
The fine print revealed that the floating church had a crèche for children, personalised prayer service as well as the terms and conditions for hiring the barge for ‘Christian occasions’. I was really disappointed to find no one around as I would have loved to know see more of this church.
Have you ever come across something like this? If yes, please do share your memories and experience in the comments section.
PS: The photograph does not really convey the floating nature of the barge and I apologise for that. When I took the photograph, I had no idea that I would be blogging about it in the future.
That is interesting. Nice capture!

What a lovely idea!
I had similar feelings when I saw a floating post office on the Dal lake.. I was overwhelmed with joy. It was so remarkable that the government has a place that the people living in houseboats on the Dal lake can use to receive and send letters. Floating people, floating post office. I doubt it is used much, but it enchanted me nonetheless.
When there are floating houses, markets and post offices too, then why not a floating church?
And I agree this is a lovely idea !
Interesting.
Heard and seen a Floating Hotel, but a floating church…nahhhhhh…
Looks like there are a lot of things floating around — houses, markets, post offices, and now a hotel as well
Echo that! A floating place of worship is a wonderful idea!
It is. And I wonder why there aren’t more of them. Maybe the wandering ‘holy men’ consider themselves to be floating places of worship !
It its an interesting concept
Yes, it is. And more so since it also doubles up as space for social gathering as well.
Nice shot!!! thanks for sharing this unique creation by man…
You’re welcome. Glad you liked it.
The things you learn when you travel… or read travel blogs
Absolutely. I am always prepared to be surprised at every turn of the road
That was nice… floating church…
I was mesmerized to see Holmenkollen in Oslo, its a man-made largest ice-skiing platform. Its huge and looks like a dragon roaring towards the sky.. I had never seen something like this before..
I would love to see the Holmenkollen and I hope I get that chance one day. Thanks, Manjilika for stopping by and commenting.
